Sunday at the Weekend Schwan’s USA CUP means a full slate of games where champions will be crowned and awards will be given to those who have proved themselves to be the best on the pitch during the weekend. Here’s a preview of championship Sunday.
The championship games for the oldest age group at USA CUP never fail to entertain. Two powerhouse clubs have dominated the division for years at USA CUP, and 2017 seems to be no different. The U19 girls team from Tokiwagi Gakuen High School finished the group stage with an undefeated 3-0 record, holding opponents scoreless in all three games. The Tokiwagi girls will take on unbeaten Fusion SC, from Plymouth/Wayzata, MN in their semifinal game.
On the boys’ side of the tournament, legendary club Rudbeckianska from Sweden have solidified themselves as the favorites to defend their 2016 U19 USA CUP weekend title. Rudbeckianska won all three of their group stage games, while conceding just two goals. They head into the playoff as the number one seed. The Thunder Bay Chill, from Ontario, emerged as the top challengers to Rudbeckianska’s title championship, playing hard-nosed defense to sweep their three games in the group stage.
The Club Deportivo Guadalajara Academy (Chivas) boys U14 team has been the story of the tournament thus far, using impressive technical skill to control every game they’ve played. Chivas scored 24 goals in the group stage to earn a berth directly into the semifinals. The Mexican squad will square off against ELA Elite from Lake Zurich, Illinois at 11:10a.m. on field U2 for a chance to play for the U14 championship.
The U17 Girls division has been hard-fought all weekend, and has remained one of the most competitive and unpredictable divisions across USA CUP. North and South will square off in the first semifinals match-up, as the Bonivital Flames of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada takes on the undefeated New Braunfels Ajax club of New Braunfels, Texas (near San Antonio). The victor will play the winner of the second semi-final game between two local Minnesota clubs, Keliix-Intra and the Northern Lights (NLS) Strikers.
Beijing Zhongguanchun United, USA CUP’s first team ever attending the tournament from Beijing, China, has looked strong in the early matches in the U13 boys division. The team swept its opponents in the group stage, and will look to carry its momentum into the playoff bracket. In their quarterfinal match late Saturday, Beijing Zhongguanchun United defeated SJR Eagles from Winnipeg, Canada by a 3-1 score.
