BLAINE, Minnesota (July 14, 2016) – It’s the Western Hemisphere’s biggest soccer event, 4th largest in the world, and on Friday at the National Sports Center in Blaine, the 32nd Schwan’s USA CUP will kick off.
Running from July 15 to July 23, this year’s tournament will be the largest ever. The final team count shows 1,178 teams, an increase of 25 over last year’s record number. The attending teams will represent 19 countries and 19 states.
Here is the breakdown of teams attending this year:
19 countries: Argentina, Aruba, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Haiti, Iceland, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Panama, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Uganda, and United States.
19 states: Alaska, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
4 Canadian provinces: Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Saskatchewan.
The international diversity doesn’t end with the teams. The referee corps will hail from 12 foreign countries and 15 different states. International officials are coming from Aruba, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, Great Britain, Haiti, Jamaica, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, and Portugal. U.S. refs hail from the following states: Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.
