"Sipping from the CUP" is the daily news column in The Daily Kick. Each day during Schwan's USA CUP, we'll be using this column to feature short news items, humorous things seen on the campus, and even some gossip! Read and enjoy.

We’d like to give a huge Schwan’s USA CUP thank you to the Tokiwagi U19 girls team from Sendai, Japan. After the Opening Ceremony, instead of heading straight home, the girls detoured over to the C fields and picked up litter.

The C fields are the fields where teams stage for the Opening Ceremony parade. When the teams have departed and entered the stadium, more than just empty fields remain. Litter and plenty of it is there as well.

The Tokiwagi girls knew what to expect because the team did the same thing two years ago.

“I’m really proud of my team,” said Seigo Masabuchi, the team’s liaison.

We had several media outlets at Schwan’s USA CUP Wednesday. Pioneer Press reporter Jace Frederick was working on a story about an Andover, Minn. family with three brothers refereeing at USA CUP. Coon Rapids TV CTN shot a story on the Edgar’s Youth Program U10 team, and a story about a local Coon Rapids, Minn. team.

Brooklyn Park, Minn. based Channel 12 sports director John Jacobson short video of two games featuring local teams from the Northwest Twin Cities.

And finally, Twin Cities Live, a local afternoon television show, went live from Schwan’s USA CUP Wednesday afternoon. Field reporter Emily Engberg was showcasing the many activities on The Hub.

Kick Cancer numbers

The third annual Kick Cancer Day at USA CUP on Wednesday was a big success. Here are the numbers for the day: 1,505 goals and 137 shutouts were recorded, with a donation made by Schwan's USA CUP and Century Link. A portion of Kick Cancer shirt sales at the Inaria Inzone Superstore resulted in a donation by Inaria and soccer.com. The donation contest was won by the U12 boys Midstate Soccer team from Decatur, Ill.

All the activities resulted in a donation of $6,125 to the four cancer fighting organizations that partnered with Schwan's USA CUP for Kick Cancer Day -- the Children's Cancer Research Fund, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients program, Minnesota Breast Cancer Coalition, and the Colon Cancer Coalition.
