30th annual Schwan’s USA CUP kicks off Friday morning

BLAINE, Minn. (July 10, 2014) – The big day has arrived. The 30th edition of one of Minnesota’s greatest annual sports events, Schwan’s USA CUP, is set to kick off Friday morning at the National Sports Center in Blaine.

Schwan’s USA CUP is the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere, this year welcoming a record 1,060 teams from 19 different countries and 21 states.

Location: National Sports Center, Blaine, Minnesota. This year, the tournament will be played on 46 fields.

Dates: Friday, July 11 through Saturday, July 19. Monday, July 14 is an off day.

By the numbers:

Total Teams: 1,060 teams. This breaks the record set last year by 43 teams. Ages of the teams from U9 to U19. A small adult indoor tournament will also be held.

21 states will be represented: Alaska, California, Colorado, Iowa, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

19 countries will be represented: Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Ecuador, England, Guatemala, Haiti, Iceland, India, Japan, Mexico, Norway, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Uganda, United States.

85 different Minnesota communities will be represented: Albertville, Andover, Anoka, Apple Valley, Arden Hills, Becker, Bemidji, Blaine, Bloomington, Brainerd, Brooklyn Park, Buffalo, Burnsville, Byron, Caledonia, Champlin, Chanhassen, Chaska, Chisago Lakes, Circle Pines, Coon Rapids, Cottage Grove, Delano, Duluth, Eagan, East Bethel, Eden Prairie, Edina, Elk River, Farmington, Forest Lake, Fridley, Golden Valley, Grand Rapids, Ham Lake, Hastings, Hermantown, Hopkins, Inver Grove Heights, Kasson, Lakeville, Lino Lakes, Mahtomedi, Mankato, Mantorville, Maple Grove, Maplewood, Mendota Heights, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, Monticello, Mound, Mounds View, New Brighton, New Hope, New Prague, North Oaks, Oak Grove, Orono, Otsego, Owatonna, Plymouth, Princeton, Prior Lake, Ramsey, Richfield, Rochester, Rogers, Rosemount, Roseville, Shakopee, Shoreview, St. Anthony, St. Cloud, St. Francis, South St. Paul, St. Louis Park, St. Michael, St. Paul, Stillwater, Waconia, Wayzata, West St. Paul, White Bear Lake, and Woodbury.

Attendance: 15,000 players. Estimated daily attendance of 22,000 and total attendance of 181,000 for the week.

Economic Impact: Over $20 million.

Some history:

11 clubs have played all 30 years, all Minnesota clubs: Blackhawks SC, Blaine SC, Bloomington Youth SC, Burnsville Fire SC, Coon Rapids Soccer Assn., Eagan Traveling Soccer, North Suburban Soccer Assn., Northern Lights (Anoka) SC, St. Croix SC, Valley United SC and White Bear SC.

Canada (specifically Manitoba) is the only foreign country to send a team every year.

66 countries have played over the years: Albania, Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belize, Bermuda, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Egypt, England, Finland, France, Germany, Guatemala, Haiti, Holland, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Liberia, Morocco, Mexico, Nigeria, Norway, Northern Ireland, Panama, Peru, Philippines, Pakistan, Poland, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia (USSR), Saudi Arabia, S. Africa, Scotland, Sweden, South Korea, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Tunisia, Uganda, Ukraine, Venezuela, U.S. Virgin Islands, West Indies, Wales, West Malaysia.

Approximately 18,000 teams have played in the last 30 years.

For working media:

Media Center: Will be located in suite 1 at the Schwan Center on the NSC campus. The Media Center will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., daily, July 11-19. Media Center will have daily game schedules, campus maps, media credentials, assistance with story ideas and golf cart transportation around the campus.

Parking: There is no reserved media parking area, but parking is generally available near the Schwan Center. Media is discouraged from moving around the campus in their own vehicles. It’s slow and parking on the north side of the campus is sometimes problematic. Media should come to the Media Center and accept our offer of golf cart transportation.

What’s new?:
India will be attending for the first time.
1,060 teams is a record number of teams.
Eight new fields will be constructed at the NSC and will be ready for play at next year’s USA CUP.
Schwan’s USA CUP will become the first U.S. youth tournament to adopt the Handshake for Peace.
World Cup Final viewing parties for third place game on July 12 and final on July 13.
Minnesota United FC will play Swansea City of the English Premier League on July 19, marking the first appearance in Minnesota by an EPL team.
