BLAINE, Minn. (July 14, 2013) – Championship games for all divisions of the 29th Schwan’s USA CUP, powered by Sport Ngin, Weekend Tournament were completed on Sunday, July 14.
This year’s tournament features a record turnout of 1,007 teams from 17 states and 17 countries, making it the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere. The weekend and week-long tournaments together will generate an estimated $20.4 million in economic impact.
During this year’s Weekend Tournament, Schwan’s USA CUP is hosting four special invitation-only tournaments, in the boys’ and girls’ U14 and U16 divisions. Called the Super Elite division, these divisions offered the highest level of soccer during the weekend tournament.
It was a great Weekend Tournament for Minnesota teams, especially those from two clubs, Minnesota Thunder Academy (MTA) and St. Croix Academy. MTA teams qualified for five championship matches today and went 3-2 in those games. St. Croix Academy qualified for four title tilts and went 3-1 in those games. Dakota Rev won the girls’ 19 title and Rochester Youth Soccer Association won the boys' 15 title and the Lakeville Starz won the 11 girls' championship to bring the Minnesota tally to nine championships today.
Three of the titles today went to international teams: EC Pinheiros from Sao Paulo, Brazil, in the 13 boys division; Thunder Bay Chill from Ontario in the 17 boys division; and to perennial USA CUP powerhouse Tokiwagi Gauken High School in the 16 girls Super Elite division.
