"Sipping from the CUP" is the new daily news column in The Daily Kick. Each day during Schwan's USA CUP, we'll be using this column to feature short news items, humorous things seen on the campus, and even some gossip! Read and enjoy.
The Floro SK from Floro, Norway came to Schwan’s USA CUP to celebrate their soccer club’s 100th anniversary. Four teams are here, all boys: 15, 16, 17 and 19. Over the Weekend Tournament, which finished on Sunday, the club won four championships and recorded a record of 29 wins and one draw. So far, in the USA CUP Weeklong Tournament, the club is still rolling along. The four teams are 9-0, and have outscored their opponents, 56-4.
With a population of 8,448, Floro is an unlikely town to send powerhouse teams to Schwan’s USA CUP. Touted as the westernmost city in Norway, it’s a circuitous drive from Floro to any other city, due to fjords and mountains. Floro SK’s pro team plays in the Norwegian third division. But if some of the youth players dominating USA CUP this year graduate to the pro team, you might see Floro SK graduating to the Tippeligaen, Norway’s first division.
Wednesday morning’s one hour, 58 minute lightning suspension was the second of the tournament so far. The first delay was on Friday during the Weekend Tournament.
One of the first questions we get during any weather delay, often just minutes into any suspension, is “What does this mean for games later in the day?” The answer is always the same: “We don’t know; we’ll announce revised schedules when we know them.”
That’s because our schedule revisions always depend on how long the delay goes. We realize this is a frustrating answer to hear, but it’s the truth. Thunderstorms are not predictable; lightning sometimes moves out of the area more quickly than we expect, or the opposite can happen and storms can camp over the NSC and persist. And until we know it’s safe to play, we can’t announce specifics.
Colleen Bourdon, USA CUP’s Recruiting Director, celebrated her birthday Wednesday. The Hou Jin All-Stars, an 11 boys team from Taiwan, found out about the big day, visited her in tournament headquarters, and serenaded Colleen with an enthusiastic “Happy Birthday.”
